Should I choose concrete for my driveway?

When looking at the driveway types available to you, it could be possible that you are unsure of what material suits the land or your property most. This is often why concrete is the chosen driveway type for many commercial and residential properties.

Long lasting, very easy to maintain and highly customisable, a concrete driveway is a perfect solution to any driveway issues you may have encountered. Concrete is ideal for a driveway surface if you have a small to medium-sized area to cover.

The benefits of a concrete driveway

Aside from the other issues we mentioned, concrete driveways have lots to offer that some other surfacing solutions don’t.  When choosing your driveway, you may want to draw up a list of its uses and your location. Different surfaces work better in certain locations than others, particularly when you consider foot traffic. The list below showcases just some of the reasons why people are turning to concrete driveways in Surrey and surrounding areas more than ever:

  • Easy to maintain
  • Better reaction to heat and light than other materials
  • Excellent load-bearing capability
  • No messy surface issues
  • Environmentally friendly
  • Long lasting
  • Customisable
  • Increased kerb appeal

Common concrete uses

Whilst concrete is extremely popular for driveways, concrete is also used for many other surfaces around home and workplaces. Due to the customisable options concrete presents you with you can easily make different areas stand out and help create some character around the building. If you have plans for other resurfacing projects you may want to investigate the potential for stamped concrete.

You could utilise stamped concrete for:

  • Patios
  • Pool decks
  • Interior flooring
  • Paths

Concrete pavers

Concrete pavers can produce neat effects for driveways, paths and just about any other surface. However, they do not always come highly recommended in some areas. This is due to the fact they can work loose rather than sit as one complete surface.

How long does a concrete driveway last?

A well-laid concrete driveway can last as long as 50 years, if not longer. This makes for a much more cost-effective project when compared to some other types of surfaces.

Concrete driveways are extremely easy to maintain. The driveway may occasionally need a tidy but its smooth surface allows for an easy sweep and clean with minimal effort. It is recommended you do not use any chemicals on this surface as they may cause discolouring. If you notice any oil spills on your driveway, you should clean them right away to prevent the same reaction.

Concrete driveways are commonly seen on smaller to mid-size driveways and as a result, can take 1-3 days to lay and up to 7 days to fully set.

Current regulations state that all new driveways must be either constructed with porous materials or have a drainage system installed.

Costs vary per size of concrete driveway and whether there are any additional features you may require. Items such as colouring or an imprinted finish will add to the cost. The easiest way to find out the potential expense is to reach out to us, we can provide you with all the information you need.

If the concrete driveway of your property is beyond its best and in need of repair, you can lay a new concrete driveway over the top. Depending on the condition of the original concrete will determine what type of work needs to be done. We can assess your driveway to give the best guidance on this.

A smart well-presented driveway is known to help increase the value of your home. Different materials will present different effects but thanks to the low maintenance of concrete, these driveways can help deliver a decent price on your house when compared to an unkempt area you park your car.

Current rules mean that planning permission for driveways is assessed on a case-by-case basis. However, if you have a suitable drainage system already installed or are using a permeable surface. If your property is rented or the construction of the driveway requires certain levels of work, it would be advisable to speak to the landlord as well as your local council.
