Overflow Carpark Farlington School : Commercial Surfacing Project
Our team at Tidey & Webb are often tasked with a wide range of projects during school holidays. With the premises free from staff and pupils, it gives us ample time to transform playgrounds, car parks, sports surfaces and more into something refreshing or brand new. That way, when the new term comes around, the full benefit of the revitalised surface can be appreciated by all who use it.
Just recently, we were tasked by Farlington School in Sussex with creating a porous overflow car park using a plastic grid system. We were delighted to be given the opportunity and set to work right away.
The plan
When we are approached regarding any surfacing job, we feel it is vital to get an understanding of the task at hand. From the space that requires surfacing through to the materials we need, each aspect is given great consideration to ensure an optimal surface is laid for the client. With Farlington School, the outline of the task was simple enough. To create a porous overflow car park.
After attending the site to view the task at hand, we set a plan and a timeline in place. With an understanding of what was required, we could now get to work!
We knew we needed to accommodate multiple vehicles, allow for sufficient drainage and to uphold the reputation that both Farlington and ourselves are proud of. Our expert surfacing specialists knew what was expected of them so got things moving as quickly as possible.
High quality porous surfacing
To create the car park that was required of us, we had to start with the excavation of the land. This required us to clear a 1300m2 space. Using our specialist equipment and qualified team the excavation was completed quickly, all ready for the next stage of the process.
We then set about installing a timber edge around the perimeter of the area and concrete kerbs to the vehicle entrances.
This project aimed to provide Farlington with an overflow car park that was porous and presentable. Now with the ground cleared and the edges looking considerably neater, we needed to lay the surface that would meet the needs of the school.
We opted for a porous membrane and 150mm of Type 3 porous sub-base. This would provide the car park with excellent drainage and eliminate the risk of flooding.
We then installed the plastic grids as required by laying them upon a gravel bedding layer. These were then filled with golden shingles to help provide added aesthetic as well as surface quality.
To finish the job and indicate the parking spaces for users, we applied white plastic studding.
With another commercial surfacing job now complete in time for the first bell of term, we moved on to the next one!
