Tesco Distribution Centre – Crawley, West Sussex

The staff car park at the centre needed an extension due to an increase in staff members. This required the transformation of an existing grassland area into an additional parking facility, along with the relocation of some light columns to optimise space.

Transforming Grassland into an Effective Parking Solution

Our initial task involved the excavation of the designated grass area. This phase was executed with meticulous attention to detail to ensure a smooth, level surface, setting a solid foundation for the work to follow.

With the area prepared, we proceeded to install kerbs, creating a well-defined and organised parking area. Concurrently, we identified and relocated several light columns. This critical step not only made the best use of the available space but also ensured appropriate lighting for safety and visibility.

Next, we installed a membrane and sub-base layer, setting the groundwork for the final surfacing. These layers provide essential stability and drainage properties, ensuring the longevity of the car park.

For the final surfacing, we laid 60mm of binder course, followed by a 40mm layer of SMA surface course. This combination delivered a durable, attractive, and low-maintenance surface, well-suited to the demands of a busy distribution centre.
